Rocky Mountain Education Series Local Heroes Project

Today, people such as national and international hockey players, singers and actors are youths' idols. Everyday people who positively influence their lives on a daily basis are rarely acknowledged. The local heroes program is all about celebrating everyday people in their own communities who are bringing about positive social change. The local hero program “Builds character – generating respect for ourselves and others,” reports a grade 7 student from Lawrence Grassi School.

During the program students explore social or environmental challenges in their community and celebrate local people who are making positive change happen. Students interview local heroes, present them with a small award of their making and a photographer takes their portrait that are displayed at a Rocky Mountain Flatbread restaurant. Since the program began over seven years ago over 350 local heroes have been celebrated by students across Western Canada. To see the latest local heroes students have appointed visit our blog.
